Album Notes Personnel: Chris Von Sneidern (various instruments); Vudi (guitar); Tania Nichols (violin); John Wesley Harding (harmonica); Mark Wallace (bass); Peter Straus (bass, background vocals); Bennett Bowman, John Stuart (drums); Jim Le Blanc (percussion); Hector Penalosa (background vocals). Producers: Chris Von Sneidern, Tom Mallon, Paul Collins. Recorded at Ordophon-Upon-Avon Studio, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Denise Stace. Around the turn of the '90s, native New Yorker Chris Von Sneidern spent over half a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area. There he honed his skills as a local solo performer while partaking of brief-and unfortunately unrecorded-stints with such great local pop bands as Flying Color and The Sneetches before releasing his first album, SIGHT AND SOUND, in 1993. Von Sneidern takes cues from such power pop forefathers as Big Star, particularly in the anguished "Bad Black Lonesome" and "Never Again My Love," and from the poppier side of Badfinger, as on the perky "Annalisa." Besides being a competent guitarist and boyishly appealing singer, Von Sneidern proves an exceptionally talented songwriter. He knows the standard power pop moves backwards and forwards and isn't afraid to move beyond them when the spirit beckons. SIGHT AND SOUND is a mature, accomplished debut that bodes well for the rest of Von Sneidern's career.
