Starting as a hard-working bar band, Australia's INXS honed their sound slogging across their homeland, playing anywhere that would have them. When they hit the big time in the 1980s, it was initially through college-radio hits from their fifth album, LISTEN LIKE THIEVES. The next two, KICK and X, launched them into mega-stardom. Sadly, after a commercially lean but artistically adventurous period in the '90s, lead singer Michael Hutchence's suicide effectively ended INXS's nearly 20-year run as one of the best pop groups of their day. (The band has since reunited to perform with other singers, however.) Chronologically arranged, SHINE LIKE IT DOES neatly compiles highlights from their career, as their hyperactive New Wave sound ("Simple Simon," "Just Keep Walking") morphed into a more funk-based groove ("The One Thing," "Dancing on the Jetty," and the absolutely stellar "Don't Change"). Adding a heavy dose of Hutchence's sensuality, the tracks from "What You Need" through "Kick" all display a gloriously slinky funk & roll and deserved the chart success they received. While reacquainting listeners with the group's hits, this collection more importantly makes a convincing case that late-period INXS was not afraid to experiment with their sound and was frequently successful at matching, if not surpassing, their earlier highs.
