Synopsis A fictionalized account of the activities of Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall, founders of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, a late nineteenth-century Audubon Society that would endure and have impact on the bird-protection movement., It's 1896 and Harriet Hemenway and her cousin Minna Hall live in Boston where they are prominent members of society. They are appalled by the latest rage in ladies hats that are decorated with dead birds. Despite the fact that women do not even have the right to vote, Harriet, Minna, and their friends gather together to form the Audubon Society. This is the true story of how two cousins worked for social progress, women's rights, and wildlife preservation. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 1995.

Industry Reviews "...Ms. Lasky makes the story enjoyable, a far cry from the sort of historical blurb you see on the back of institutional brochures. The title alone makes this storybook stand out on the shelf--especially when you realize it's absolutely true. The language is vivid and pointed....David Catrow's illustrations are colorfully detailed, encouraging young readers to identify those Arctic terns, owls, and woodpeckers perched on all those hats." New York Times Book Review - Karen Leggett (11/12/1995)
"David Catrow's very colorful illustrations capture the ridiculous humor of these overdone hats, but in doing so, he very faithfully renders accurate bird drawings. His illustrations are downright hilarious, often matching the bird to the wearer....This is an excellent book for your budding naturalist. Boston Book Review - Tim Moses (03/19/1996)
