Movie Description
Rival Chinese gangs use an alluring and intelligent prostitute as a go-between, subtly tempting each other to make a false move in this acclaimed thriller.

Credits
Cast:Gong Li
Director:Yimou Zhang

Synopsis
A visually dazzling gangster film from director Zhang Yimou. Nightclub singer Xiao Jingbao lives a pampered life as the mistress of Shanghai godfather Mr. Tang. However, she gets in over her head after she begins an affair with Song, Mr. Tang's number two man, who wants to wrench control of the crime dynasty.

Eventually, Xiao Jingbao finds herself caught in the middle of a mob war. Forced to leave behind her life of luxury and go into hiding with Mr. Tang, she gradually realizes just how expendable she is to both men.

We see all this through the eyes of Shuisheng, a 14-year-old boy whose uncle has brought him into the Tang Brotherhood. Assigned the task of keeping watch over Xiao Jingbao, he ultimately becomes her sole, trusted confidante.

Film Notes
Co-produced by Shanghai Film Studio and UGC Images, with the participation of Le Ministere Des Affaires Etrangeres.

The LA Film Critics Circle awarded Lu Yue for Best Cinematography of 1995.

Additional cast: Jiang Baoying (Widow).

The Chinese government "asked" director Zhang Yimou not to attend the opening night of the 1995 New York Film Festival (September 29), at which "Shanghai Triad" was shown, after the festival refused to cancel the showing of "The Gate of Heavenly Peace," a documentary about the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. The director complied.
