Movie Description From his seat on a commuter train, a respected but downtrodden Tokyo office worker spies a beautiful woman in the window of a dance studio. Mesmerized, he signs up for ballroom dance instruction at the school, despite the threat of losing face by participating in such an "undignified" public spectable. However, he soon discovers that he has a natural aptitude--and a natural love--for dancing, much to the dismay of his perplexed wife and daughter.

Industry Reviews "...The fancy footwork provides a dazzling, emotional finale....The cast is uniformly strong..." Variety - Leonard Klady (06/10/1996)
"...SHALL WE DANCE? unfolds in broadly heartwarming fashion....[The dancing] is filmed with a wishful Fred-and-Ginger sweetness that gives the film a studiously effervescent mood..." New York Times - Janet Maslin (07/11/1997)
"...SHALL WE DANCE? is a great-looking, great-sounding film, and Yoshikazu Suo's lilting, sometimes wistful score is a major component in the picture's success. You don't want to sit this one out..." Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas (07/11/1997)
"...A well-crafted character study..." Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (07/18/1997)
