Album Notes
The works of William Shakespeare have enough music in the words to keep composers working through the end of time. Between 1816 and 1821, Henry Rowley Bishop helped create operas from Shakespeare's stage work. The productions, which took place at Covent Garden, were crowd-pleasing affairs featuring the most popular actors of the day. Unlike traditional opera, Bishop's operas were not sung all the way through, and the music was easy enough to allow actors without rigorous operatic training to join in.
Bishop's compositions are light and airy, full of string and winds, and typically English. It is easy to see why the popularity of these songs continues: melodic with an easy, subtle rhythm, they follow the iambic pentameter of Shakespeare's verse. Despite their heavenly lyrics, these songs are quite human and easy to enjoy.
Reviews:
Fanfare (1-2/00, p.210) - "...[Susan Gritton's] superb technical control of the coloratura demands of 'Lo!, Hear the Gentle Lark'...is almost worth the price of the disc alone....Philip Pickett...directs with verve, spirit, and, in the gentler songs, sensitivity..."
American Record Guide (1-2/00, p. 68) - "...The music is uncomplicated, though well crafted and presented with confidence...and grand style by Philip Picket's [Musicians of the Globe]....I don't think I have ever heard [this music] performed with more polish, flair and sensitivity..."
