Track Listing 1. More Brahms 2. Houses and People 3. Girl Who Cried Champagne, The 4. Brooklyn Bridge 5. Lawns 6. Healing Power
Album Notes Personnel: Carla Bley (organ, synthesizer); Larry Willis (piano); Hiram Bullock (guitar, bass); Steve Swallow (bass); Victor Lewis (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York between December 1986 and January 1987. Carla Bley has always been one for fairly straightforward titles. This 1987 release features her music and playing as accompanied by five additional musicians. A late night feel pervades SEXTET, which is a bit like a more laid back version of her DINNER MUSIC album. This time out, Bley dispenses with horns and primarily gives the melody lines to guitarist Hiram Bullock and pianist Larry Willis. Further melodic propulsion comes from Steve Swallow's bass. His playing dances around drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Don Alias while Bley's organ adds depth and texture. She is a descriptive and evocative writer as well, and her "Lawns" is more melancholic than you would imagine a piece so titled to be. This is one of Bley's most relaxed outings, with her characteristic wit taking a backseat to her ever-present warmth.
