Synopsis Rachel Pollack's SEVENTY-EIGHT DEGREES OF WISDOM is considered one of the key works on the Tarot, taking it out of the realm of the arcane (the Golden Dawn tradition) and into that of archetypal psychology and comparative myth (The Jungian tradition). It is also a superb introduction to the art, detailing the origins of the cards and the stories behind various decks, and providing basic instructions for performing an array of readings. Pollack bases her writing here on the Rider-Waite Deck (created in 1910), and offers insightful but simple guidelines. Each card is given a thorough description, in terms of meaning, symbolism, and psychological perspective. Pollack deals the cards of the Major Arcana into three sections--the conscious, the unconscious, and the "superconscious" (the spiritual quest)--and she emphasizes the importance of relating to the cards on a deeply personal level in addition to studying their symbolic significance and relation to numerology and the Kabbalah.
