In Christophe Hein's epic novel of personal and national growth, the life story of Bernard Haber is told by five narrators over five decades: his early days as a refugee from Eastern Germany after World War II; the hardships and cruelties heaped upon him by the inhabitants of his village--including bullying, injustice, and the murder of his carpenter father; his obsessive quest for status, money and revenge; and finally his coming to terms with his responsibilities. Not only a powerful tale of a man's life, SETTLEMENT acts as a testament to the hardships and challenges Germany faced in the last half of the 20th century.
