Decatur, Georgia rapper I-20 declares on "Eyes Open (Intro)," "I should only be defined by the fact that I can rhyme," a theme often repeated on his solo debut record, SELF EXPLANATORY. Throughout the album, this member of the hip-hop supergroup Disturbing Tha Peace hints of a storied past, but is sharply focused on a present in which he can live off the strength of his skills. There's a lot going on in I-20's fertile mind, and the balance of fierce crunk energy with acute self-awareness and vulnerability makes for an intriguing listen.
After the intro, I-20 drives into a familiar grimy, bass-heavy sound on "Meet the Dealer," with mentor Ludacris stopping in for one of his creepier guest shots. I-20's uniquely chopped-and-screwed growl kicks into full gear on the forceful "Fightin in the Club" (featuring Chingy and others). His most powerful moments come when he slows it down and becomes reflective, as on the mellow "May Sound Crazy." I-20's mental wheels are constantly turning, and, when he plumbs the depths of his soul, a complexly wired individual emerges with a slew of fascinating lyrical images. Backed by a brace of able producers, I-20 unleashes a set of tracks that proves to be one heady mix.
