Formerly half of the groundbreaking duo Foster and Lloyd, Radney Foster is known for his edgy, intelligent take on country music. On his third solo release, Foster goes for more of a rock sensibility, but loses none of his edge. This is an outstanding collection of intensely personal songs, which Foster sings with an intensity that ranges from bitter to jubilant. Songs about failed relationships ("The Kiss") are balanced with songs celebrating successful ones ("The Lucky Ones") or songs of forgiveness and longing ("You Were So Right," "God Knows When"). The lovely "Raining On Sunday" boasts a harmony vocal by Hootie & the Blowfish's Darius Rucker, while Emmylou Harris sings on the album's closing track, "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)," a touching and whimsical lullaby to Foster's son. "I'm In," which captures the fear and the exhilaration of new love, is a absolute gem of a song is made even more memorable by a gorgeous counterpoint vocal from singer Abra Moore. Foster's voice still marks him as "country," but this is an album that defies easy categorization--unless, of course, the category is "great music."
Industry Reviews ...Foster isn't a country performer as much as he is a natural pop artist. Here, he draws on the pain of divorce and the redemption of new love on songs packed with tuneful, hard-edged melodies and fist-in-glove lyrics. Another phoenix rises, this time to stay... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (05/28/1999)
