Synopsis A renegade faction of the CIA has created an elaborate scheme to gain primacy over the FBI via the manipulation of key members of Congress. The plan seems simple when they uncover a bribery scam produced by lobbyist Danny Buchanan. Assassinate Danny and his beautiful assistant Faith Lockhart, force the bribed legislators to support the CIA over the FBI under threat of exposure, and the mission will be accomplished. Or so they think. As the CIA has been scheming, the lovely Faith has been confessing to the crimes of her success-starved mentor to none other than the FBI. Now that Faith and Danny are under the watchful eyes of FBI agent Brooke Reynolds and private investigator Lee Adams, the bad guys find more obstacles than they bargained for.

Industry Reviews "With lumbering exposition, cringe-inducing dialogue, and a bogus bunch of characters that includes a high-ranking villain who does everything but twirl his mustache like Simon Legree, Baldacci wipes out all promise of suspense." Entertainment Weekly - Charles Winecoff (12/17/1999)
