Synopsis
Gary Giddins' impressive biography of perhaps the greatest jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong, is a perfect mix of musical erudition, personal detail, and informed criticism. In SATCHMO, Giddins stakes out Armstrong's artistic territory as an innovative jazz genius who democratized his music and saw no separation between enthralling his highbrow fans, indulging in cornball vaudeville routines, and performing pop tunes. An equal opportunity entertainer, Armstrong invested his art with both pure emotion and broad humor, creating, in Giddins's view, an image of the artist as a "liberated black man [who] regularly passed through whites-only portals, leaving the doors open behind him." But the apparent ease with which Armstrong achieved his position of preeminence was illusory: having suffered from racism throughout his career, Armstrong was deeply involved in this and other social issues, and Giddins is instructive on the musician's courageous and principled stand in 1957 against white racism, for which he was attacked by both Sammy Davis, Jr., and Adam Clayton Powell. One of the best biographies of any musician, SATCHMO is a tribute to the humanity and artistry of its subject, and to the considerable skills of its author.
