A widowed father, still mourning his wife's death, decides to marry again, for his own sake and for his two children. So he advertises for a bride and in comes Sarah, a "plain and tall" New England schoolteacher. From the moment she arrives at their Kansas farm, her warmth and wit win the family's love and promise to make them complete again.
But then Sarah becomes desperately homesick for her home in Maine and for the sea... and it seems as if once again, the farmer and his children will lose a wife and mother.
