Synopsis Orson Scott Card is best known for his science fiction, particularly ENDER'S GAME, but SAINTS, first published in 1984 as a romance paperback, is a finely crafted historical fiction about the early days of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints. The heroine, Dinah Kirkham, leaves behind the cruelties of industrial 19th century England, and follows a group promising to build in America a city of God. Dinah eventually becomes one of the wives of Joseph Smith, the Church's founder. Though Card is himself a Mormon, he portrays the characters as complex and flawed, even though his sympathies clearly lie with Smith and Dinah as they attempt to carve out a way of life and create a new world.
