PreS The familiar Grimms' tale of the strange little man who helps the miller's daughter spin straw into gold is retold in simple rebus style. The symbols are identified before the story begins, although in a blurb on the back jacket, readers are invited to ``solve'' the picture puzzles. The simplistic narrative serves as a vehicle for the rebuses, and while innocuous, is bland and lacks depth. Roy's cartoonlike watercolors are competent but unexceptional. There is nothing to capture the eye or the imagination, and the pale colors seem washed out. This pallid edition does not begin to compare with Paul O. Zelinsky's version, with its richly textured paintings (Dutton, 1986) or Gennady Spirin's elegant illustrations for Alison Sage's retelling (Dial, 1991).
