Synopsis During two short seasons at the track, Ruffian was hailed as the greatest thoroughbred filly of all time. She was a record-breaker--big, bold, and fast. Then, on July 6, 1975, in a highly-publicized match race at Belmont Park billed as the "Battle of the Sexes" and watched on television by 18 million people, Ruffian faced the Kentucky Derby-winning colt Foolish Pleasure. Ruffian was half a length in front when she shattered her ankle. Later that night, after extraordinary (and controversial) efforts to save her life, she had to be destroyed. Jane Schwartz tells the Ruffian story, which is not only about a great horse but about the powerful bond that can develop between animals and humans, and about the kind of greatness that is willing to give everything, no matter what the cost.
