Synopsis Thirteen-year-old fraternal twins Dallas and Florida have grown up in a terrible orphanage but their lives change forever when an eccentric but sweet older couple invites them each on an adventure, beginning in an almost magical place called Ruby Holler., Two orphans, Ruby and her brother, Dallas, are instructed by the evil Mr. Trepid--he runs the orphanage with his wife--that they must accompany the elderly Moreys on separate vacations. The two suspect something is amiss, but the Moreys just might prove to be looking out for the children's best interests.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Dallas leaned far out of the window, his eyes fixed on a bird flying lazily in the distance. Sun slanted through the clouds above, as if a spotlight were aimed on the bird."
Industry Reviews "There's an appealing folkloric tinge to this novel....Reluctant readers may also appreciate the very short chapters (some are no more than two pages in length) and the easygoing dialogue."
"Creech's bright humor, vivid characterization, and deft language, combined with the twists and turns of the plot, make reading this novel aloud a rare treat." Riverbank Review - Lee Galda
