Album Notes Personnel includes: Roy Clark (vocals, acoustic guitar); Brad Davis, Ronnie P. Kingery (acoustic guitar); Wanda Vick (dobro, fiddle); Pat Bergeson (harmonica); Roger Morris (keyboards); Mark Birchfield (bass); Scott Weckerly (drums); The Roy Clark Gospel Singers (background vocals). Prinipally recorded at Caravell Studios, Branson, Missouri & Principle Studios, Nashville, Tennessee in March 1996. ROY CLARK SINGS & PLAYS GOSPEL GREATS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country, Or Bluegrass Gospel Album. Roy Clark achieved maximum visibility when he appeared as a regular on TV's mock-hillbilly variety show Hee-Haw. Those whose knowledge of Clark ends there never got to find out that he was an extremely gifted country singer and picker in his own right, fully capable of enrapturing any hardcore country music audience. Even those who know this much may be surprised to learn that Clark is equally well-versed in the gospel music tradition. Clark's appreciation for the old hymns goes back to his Virginia childhood, and on this album he revisits the music that touched him at an early age. The hot picking for which Clark is known isn't absent here, but it does take a back seat to full-band arrangements, an angelic gospel choir, and of course, Roy's own heartfelt singing.
