Album Notes Personnel: Charlie Daniels, Bruce Brown, Chris Wormer (vocals, guitar); Taz DiGregorio (vocals, keyboards); David Angell, David Davidson (violin); Kathryn Plummer (viola); John Catchings (cello); Charlie Hayward (bass); Pat McDonald (drums, percussion); Bonnie Bramlett, Carolyn Corlew (background vocals). Recorded at Twin Pines Studio, Lebanon, Tennessee. Charlie Daniels' 2000 release ROAD DOGS is one of the most vital records the veteran country-rock fiddler has made since his late '70s heyday. For one thing, it's almost entirely self-written, unlike a lot of Daniels' contemporary work, and the songs are among Daniels' best, particularly the hot seven-and-a-half-minute jam "Across the Line." The two non-originals, "Even Up the Score" and "Standing in the Rain," are by Daniels' longtime keyboardist Joel "Taz" DiGregorio, whose Western swing-influenced boppers are always a highlight of any Daniels album. Daniels' voice is a bit weaker than it was in the '70s, but his fiddle playing, which dominates the album, is as stunning as ever. ROAD DOGS is a most welcome and unexpected comeback.
