Recorded at The Sound Factory, Los Angeles, California and His House Studios, New York, New York. RIGHTEOUS LOVE makes good on the promise of her major label debut RELISH that Joan Osborne may be the premiere alt R&B chanteuse of her generation. She returns here with equal force, marrying rock, soul, folk, and even elements of dance and world music in incisive, heartfelt songs about love and life. The record is powered by Osborne's passionate singing voice (as capable of subtle nuance as it is of scratchy-throated wailing) and her ability to bring the intensity of roots music into a contemporary context. Fiery Southern gospel (Osborne's Kentucky roots are still close to the surface) informs several of the tunes, such as the bluesy, breezy "Angel Face" and the hard-rocking title track. On the groove-centered, disco-inflected "Safety in Numbers" and the sassy "My Love Is Alive" syncopated dance rhythms predominate, but Osborne pulls surprises from her stylistic bag of tricks throughout, including slinky Middle Eastern motifs ("If I Was Your Man") and moody, idiosyncratic pop ("Baby Love"). Crack musicians and slick production give Osborne's gutsy aesthetic hodge-podge a well-polished surface, making RIGHTEOUS LOVE another winner.
