About this Movie
Movie Description
A rare light romantic comedy with Hitchcockian touches, RICH AND STRANGE tells the story of a young and bored married couple (Henry Kendall and Joan Barry) who inherit some money and set off on a trip around the world, only to discover--after having their respective affairs--that money can't buy happiness. The film was based on the novel by Dale Collins, but the film has often been interpreted as containing autobiographical elements from Hitchcock's marriage to his frequent collaborator Alma Reville and their honeymoon experiences cruising the Mediterranean.

Credits
Cast:Henry Kendall, Joan Barry
Director:Alfred Hitchcock
Producer:John Maxwell

Synopsis
Mixing silent film techniques with the new element of sound--only one-fifth of the film offers dialog--RICH AND STRANGE telles the charming story of Fred Hill (Henry Kendall) and his wife, Emily (Joan Barry), a small-town British couple who inherit some money from a rich uncle and suddenly decide to take a world cruise. Both, however, find themselves out of their element, and their attempts at extramarital adventures fail miserably. Their newfound sophistication having backfired, the couple will have to try to return to good old England, but their journey will be full of mishaps and unexpected disaster. Released under the title EAST OF SHANGHAI in the United States, the film was based on the novel by Dale Collins and was a departure for Hitchcock in both style and tone.

Film Notes
Theatrical Release: December 1931.

The source novel by Dale Collins was published in 1930.
