Synopsis
In a note that precedes the text, the author speaks of his special fondness for street music; his "requiem" can be thought of in these terms--every requiem is both a homage and a farewell This novel is set in Lisbon on a torrid day in July. The unnamed narrator awaits a midnight appointment with a great poet, "perhaps the greatest poet of the 20th century" who died many years before. He fills his day with encounters with people on the street and ghost from his past. How does the past live in the present? How do the dead speak to the living and the living to the dead?
