Album Notes Personnel includes: Billy Dean, Alison Krauss & Union Station. It makes sense that Billy Dean co-produced REAL MAN with David Gates of '70s mellow rockers Bread--after all, he's always seemed more soft rock than country. REAL MAN continues that trend--with a few exceptions, only the barest hint of steel guitar, mandolin or fiddle on the album reminds the listener that Dean is a supposedly a "country" artist. That's not to say that REAL MAN is lacking, though. Dean has an immensely appealing voice, and writes straightforward yet touching songs. He co-wrote every track on REAL MAN, resulting in a startlingly personal album that contains his musings on love ("I'm A Fool Too"), divorce ("I'm Not Needed Here Now"), and making a fresh start ("If I Could Find the Heart "). Family is an overriding theme: the autobiographical title track details the lessons Dean's dad taught him, while "Big Sister," featuring guest vocals from Alison Krauss, describes his love-hate relationship with his sister. "Be My Song" was inspired by his daughter, and his young son contributes vocals to "Voices Singing." There are a few catchy, commercial numbers, but REAL MAN is best viewed as sort of an emotional journey though Billy Dean's soul--which is a pleasant ride.
