Veteran singer-songwriter Olney was the gritty-voiced rock & rolling enfant terrible of the Nashville scene in the '70s. Over the years his sound has opened up to embrace the country and folk traditions he's been surrounded by, but his work has never lost its cutting edge. Among Olney's many admirers was the late patron saint of Nashville songwriting Townes Van Zandt, whose influence can be heard plainly throughout REAL LIES. Like Van Zandt, Olney uses his rough, earthy voice in service of sharp storytelling. "Robert Ford And Jesse James" is an outlaw tale with a twist worthy of Tom T. Hall. "Thirty Coins Of Gold" is a fanciful ballad involving religion, money and art. The opening "House Rules" shows that Olney can grab a bluesy, roadhouse groove by the throat and wring it for all it's worth. REAL LIES is a testament to the highly developed craftsmanship of one of America's most incisive songwriters.
