Industry Reviews Gr 4-6 Tyrannosaurus rex got upstaged in Jurassic Park by the smaller, nasty Velociraptor, and ever since then the raptor has become, if not a household word, a new favorite of young dinosaur fans. Now Lessem, who worked as a science advisor on the film (and has a hard time letting readers forget it which detracts from an otherwise informative text), devotes a whole book to the dinosaurs loosely know as raptors. Five kinds are highlighted individually, with a page on their discovery and the scientists involved, followed by a page of facts, including size, environment, weight, and the time period in which they lived. The author also introduces speculations on discoveries of fossils that might be raptors, information on the bone and claw structure that classify a raptor, and an explanation of how dinosaurs are thought to have evolved into birds. Peters's accomplished, action-oriented, brightly colored artwork is what makes this book a definite plus to any collection on prehistoric creatures. Cathryn A.
