Synopsis
This is Hannah Arendt's third and most extensive biography of Ms. Rahel Levin Varnhagen. As a young student in the 1920s, Ms. Arendt discovered Ms. Varnhagen's letters and memoirs in a Berlin library, and came to form an intense identification with her. Though 130 years separated them, they had much in common: Both were Jewish woman living in Berlin; both were intelligent, ambitious, and fully conscious of both their female and Jewish identities. Arendt conveys both her own interest in her subject, as well as the circumstances that led to Ms. Varnhagen's eventual conversion to Christianity. Includes archival letters in German and photographs of both women.

Industry Reviews
"Its [the biography's] excitement lies in the extraordinary immediacy Arendt brings to the writing. One can easily see her poring intently over this life and these letters, while beyond the library windows the world is preparing an irrefutable demonstration of the thing that is clarifying in her as she absorbs the words left behind by the extraordinary Rahel."
