Ruth Brown is a genuine American treasure, as evidenced by this fine collection of rhythm and blues. The fact that a lot of her own countrymen still aren't familiar with Ruth Brown, while she carries virtual legend status throughout much of the rest of the world, says a lot more about native musical ignorance than it does about European taste. Well, not to worry, Brown has re-emerged, to remind us all of what a great R&B singer she is.
Plain and simple, the lady can sing, as she proves on tunes like "That Train Don't Stop Here," a swinging jam from a woman who's plain fed up with her man, and "Destination Heartbreak," a song that recalls, in its style and structure, her earlier Atlantic records. This disc features tunes both old and new, and the tasteful arrangements do all of them justice. If you aren't familiar with Ruth Brown's work, take this opportunity to get acquainted!
