Album Notes PUSSY, KING OF THE PIRATES is a musical accompaniment to Kathy Acker's novel of the same name. Acker reads from the novel and performs related spoken-word pieces, while The Mekons add musical backgrounds. If the title alone isn't enough to warn you, be aware that PUSSY, KING OF THE PIRATES is not an album for the prudish. Not quite so much an album as a soundtrack to the late novelist Kathy Acker's book of the same name, PUSSY, KING OF THE PIRATES consists of readings from the novel interspersed with songs inspired by it. A pointed and bawdy parable of sexual emancipation, the book is fascinating and often hilarious, and Acker's lived-in voice suits the material well. Sally Timms, who sings most of the songs, affects a bluesier tone than usual. The band's tunes and arrangements are as wide-ranging as ever, from the drifting Afro-Cuban pirate atmospherics of "The Song of the Dogs" to the clattering "Into the Strange," one of their most clamorous tracks since their early postpunk days.
Industry Reviews 7 (out of 10) - ...Outrageous concept album ahoy!....not for the faint of heart or the prudish....`Into the Strange' sounds exactly like a grumpy Bjork fronting Ministry... NME (03/09/1996)
...Acker's sardonic narration bridges a spunky mix of chanties, odes, even a disco stomp that yields provocative, if uneven, results. - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (02/02/1996)
6 - Reasonably Good - ...the Mekons, past masters of cultural thievery and exploiting self-conscious high-lit bricolage to their own ends, make Acker's lyrics their own by doing what rockers have done best since time immemorial: striking a pose and cranking up the volume... Spin (03/01/1996)
3 Stars - Good - ...Behind its explicit lyrics and fractured music, PUSSY loads up on big concepts: original sin, sex as salvation, the end of the world... Rolling Stone (03/07/1996)
...Acker's...monologues and lyrics are so intrinsically linked to the musical content that we find a very female, very meditative Mekons here, creating bizarrely beautiful, post-modern sea shanties. The band frequently come on like a malicious...Massive Attack, with subtle shades of their own country folk'n'roll lurking close at hand... Melody Maker (02/03/1996)
