Synopsis
"The Divine Comedy" is the story of a pilgrim's journey to God. A man named Dante is lost in dark wood; through the intervention of his beloved Beatrice in Heaven, the Roman poet Virgil appears in the forest to lead Dante to her. In order to reach heaven, however, they must first pass through Hell and Purgatory. After journeying through Hell (Inferno), they climb the mountain of Purgatory (Purgatorio); at the peak, Dante is reunited with Beatrice, who serves as his guide through Paradise (Paradisio).

Industry Reviews
"In an age that provides more and more opportunities to enjoy blockbuster thrills and to behold dazzling real-looking terrors, the fewer and fewer occasions we get to experience authentic human feelings anew are not to be wasted. Despite its shortcomings, Merwin's new PURGATORIO is one such occasion, and we should be grateful for it."
New York Times Book Review - Daniel Mendelsohn (07/23/2000)

"He transports Dante's own natural perceptions with a sure hand, whether by his clear and easy-to-follow version of the extended simile in canto XXX, where the spring winds and the snow melting in the Apennines intricately simulate Dante's own hardened heart, now melting into sighs and tears, or in his attention to render well those details that give Purgatorio its physical veracity--as when Dante panics because he does not see Virgil's shadow."
Boston Review - Brett Foster
