Recording information: Marcata Recording, New York, New York (2005). For a band named after an R.E.M. song, World Leader Pretend sounds a lot like...Echo & the Bunnymen. Like those Liverpool legends, WLP has a penchant for string sections and prefers bells and whistles in large amounts. On the band's Warner Bros. debut, PUNCHES, melancholy pop songs meet with orchestral backing, horns, various keyboards, and even glockenspiel. While the album opener, "Bang Theory," unfolds like a missing track from the Bunnymen's OCEAN RAIN, "Dreamdaddy" presents a catchy minor-key arrangement that does bring to mind latter-day R.E.M. As the record progresses, it becomes clear that World Leader Pretend transcends its influences with a dark chamber-pop sound that's uncommon in the world of major-label rock. "The Masses" is downright foreboding, and "A Grammarian Stuck in a Medical Drama" proves to be a mini-epic that ends in a squall of guitar feedback. With an album full of proudly unconventional rock, World Leader Pretend is more than happy to be sad.
