Album Notes The Church: Jay Dee Daugherty, Peter Koppes, Marty Willson-Piper and Steven Kilbey. After the brief misstep of GOLD AFTERNOON FIX (which still managed to feature some pretty dandy tracks) and the replacement of long-time drummer Richard Ploog, the Church returned with the epic (in every sense of the word) PRIEST=AURA. Though a couple of the songs fall a little short of the band's standard, PRIEST is a solid, instantly accessible album. The seven-minute-long album opener, "Aura," is half the first-person narration of a soldier--a conquistador perhaps--and half a list of ethereal equations (the source of the album's title). "Ripple" is a vintage Church psychedelic pop, with guitars that soar and wheel about and Steve Kilbey's detached vocals delivering cinematic lyrics. "Kings" features two beautiful guitar lines--one echoing like slowly falling raindrops, the other understated and spacious. "Chaos" feels like a couple of songs very carefully edited into a surprisingly cohesive nine-plus minutes, featuring straight-ahead rock, pop, trance, and ambient sound sculpture.
Industry Reviews 3 Stars - Good - ..quite unbelievably windswept, it waxes sensual, textural and pastoral.. Q (05/01/1992)
..the Church make some of the most beautiful noise in rock...magnificent aural sculptures.. - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (03/20/1992)
