Synopsis Based on actual events, this ingenious graphic novel follows four lions who escape from the Baghdad Zoo during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. As the anthropomorphic lions wander through the surreal maelstrom of the bombarded city, they contemplate the philosophy of liberation: is it better to live in safe captivity or chaotic freedom? Drawn beautifully by Niko Henrichon and written by Brian K. Vaughan (his EX MACHINA won the Eisner award winner for best new series in 2005), the book marvelously contrasts the disparate worlds of the animals and the human destruction, and uses as this as a catalyst for rich metaphorical musings. There's a certain element of whimsy in the tale--a turtle mourns his dead family--but the underlying sentiments are serious and surprisingly potent.

Industry Reviews "[PRIDE OF BAGHDAD] parodies the surrealism of war, with bewildered yet realistic animals among the ruined, megalomaniacal monuments of Baghdad....[It] is simple, lavishly drawn and devastating." (07/10/2006)
