Album Notes PRE-HISTORY: THE LOST STEELTOWN RECORDINGS is a compilation of songs from the group's pre-Motown days, recorded for the Steeltown label. It also includes 2 recordings made when the group called itself Ripples & Waves Plus Michael. Producer: Ben Brown. Compilation producer: Paul Tarnopol, David Gore. Digitally remastered by Dennis Drake. PRE-HISTORY: THE LOST STEELTOWN RECORDINGS collects 14 tracks the Jacksons recorded pre-Motown on weekends during 1967 in Gary, Indiana. Most of the songs have a crude garage rock feel, are between two and three minutes long, and are about as sophomoric as the boys were themselves. The titles say it all: "Let Me Carry Your Schoolbooks," "We Don't Have to Be Over 21 to Fall in Love," and "I Never Had a Girl." Nevertheless, cover versions of "My Girl," "Under the Boardwalk," and "Tracks of My Tears" show a real maturity in Michael's voice and the beginnings of his future style. Most noteworthy is the primitive-sounding recording (you can hear sheet music falling off a music stand at one point, not to mention lapses in sound where someone forgot to step closer to the microphone) of "Soul Jerk," where the band seems to let go and just rock. For fans of early Jackson memorabilia and their yet unpolished techniques, PRE-HISTORY is an edifying collection.
