Industry Reviews Greenstein's journalistic 'portraits' of ten notable 20th-century astronomers and physicists, including three women and one Third World scientist, are based on limited secondary sources and personal interviews; most of them previously appeared as columns in the American Scholar. High-minded scientific reportage, NOVA-style, emphasizing (even when discussing Big Science) heroic individual genius making fundamental discoveries. . . . Profiles are rambling and disjointed, with focus on the good 'stories.' The author overly intervenes with first-person opinions but does a commendable job in treating the science involved. The chapter on Richard Feynman is effective and affecting. Suitable for general readers and lower-division undergraduates.

[Greenstein's] list contains two genius types: the ordinary--you and I would be just as good as they are, if only we were many times better--and the magician. We might just understand what the magicians have done, but the mental processes they have used to get there are beyond most of us. . . . Portraits of Discovery is incisive, entertaining, thought-provoking and very rewarding. I recommend it highly to all scientists, young and old.
