Album Notes Personnel: Jim Carroll (vocals, spoken vocals); Anton Sanko (guitar, lap steel guitar, keyboards, bass) (David Torn (guitar, dobro, koto, loops); Erik Sanko (guitar, E-bow, bass, background vocals); Tristan Avakian (guitar, bass, background vocals); Lenny Kaye (guitar, background vocals); Gordon Minette (trumpet, piano, keyboards, bass); Frank Vilardi (drums, percussion). Recorded at Easter Island Recording, New York, New York. Though everyone from Dylan to Jewel has dabbled in poetry with varying degrees of success, Carroll is among the few (Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen) to successfully explore both poetry and rock & roll. He was known as a writer of verse and poetry when he combined his imagistic lyrics with post-punk rock at the end of the CBGB's era. He's made both spoken word and rock band recordings, but this is the first time he's combined the two. Aided by erstwhile Suzanne Vega sidemen Anton Sanko and Frank Vilardi (among others), he ventures into hard-hitting rock ("Falling Down Laughing"), accompanied recitation ("Things That Fly") and pieces that combine poetry with evocative, ambient soundscapes. Carroll's literary skills and his succinct delivery help to make POOLS OF MERCURY a satisfying mix of music and verse.
