Kershaw possesses a deft melodicism, a wry sense of humor and a voice that could melt a glacier. On POLITICS, RELIGION AND HER, which features the pop-country hits "Vidalia" and "Meant To Be," he uses those gifts to produce an album that combines tradition and innovation. The light-hearted "Vidalia" displays Kershaw's knack for twisting his voice around the contours of a melody with precision and grace. While only one song here is a Kershaw composition, he knows how to pick songs perfectly suited to his style. The title cut is half-humor, half-heartbreak, and it sounds made to order for Kershaw's easy vocal charms.
Taking a left turn on later cuts, this Cajun country boy revisits Chuck Berry's classic stomper "Memphis, Tennessee" and makes his nod to '70s nostalgia by attempting a reclamation of the bell-bottomed AM hit "Chevy Van." Whether he's reworking an old standard or creating a new one, Kershaw's voice will make POLITICS, RELIGION AND HER a pleasure for any fan of contemporary country.
