Album Notes Although PHOENIX CITY bills itself as "a history of the world's greatest ska band," the Skatalites' discography is so vast that there's only room on this expansive double CD for the best of their sides for producer Duke Reid, plus a few Studio One cuts. But, as that amounts to 54 smoking instrumentals, varying from explosive dance tracks "Guns of Navarone" and "Phoenix City" to dreamy island tune "Melody Jamboree," satisfaction can be unconditionally guaranteed. The first half-dozen tracks here are solid evidence of this seminal outfit's roots in American jazz and R&B, but they hit their stride with a vengeance on the loping, relaxed rhythm of "J.F.K.'s Memory" and the gorgeous orchestrations of Don Drummond's "Spider." It's hard to believe that the Skatalites' prolific recorded output spans only the years 1964-'65, and equally hard to equate this carefree music with the tragic circumstances in which the band split up, following main composer and trombonist Drummond's mental breakdown and imprisonment for murder. PHOENIX CITY is a testament to the Skatalites' musical creativity--a dazzling collection of effortless instrumental virtuosity bonded to an unerringly single-minded sense of rhythm.
