Synopsis Anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson shares her new vision of learning through participation. She argues that individuals who shed their familiar habits of learning and actively seek new and unfamiliar experiences with an open mind will lead more enriched lives. She proposes that much of life's meaning lies at the edge of our awareness, much as we see objects with peripheral vision. To substantiate her ideas, Bateson describes exotic settings with a thoughtful eye and shows how interaction with other cultures brings perspective to one's life.

Industry Reviews "One of the most original and important thinkers of our time." Deborah Tannen
"We reach for knowledge as an instrument of power, not as an instrument of delight...Ironically, in our society both the strongest, those who have already succeeded, and the weakest, those who feel destined for failure, defend themselves against new learning." Peripheral Visions - Mary Catherine Bateson
"Bateson calls for nothing less than a complete rethinking of the educational process...She takes us on strange journeys that inevitably result in surprising revelations." Lifton
"A way to suck the most out of life, to broaden one's vision and experience, to raise children better equipped to live in a changing world." Lifton
"The author's vast experience and eclectic knowledge combine to provide incisive perspectives on a variety of contemporary issues, ranging from international politics to ecology to education.
