Synopsis Pereira is an obese, middle-aged widower with a heart condition and a penchant for sweet lemonade and omelettes. A veteran crime reporter editing the Culture Page of a Lisbon daily in 1938, he prints 19th-century French stories and plans to run obituaries on distinguished authors of conservative views. But when he takes on a young assistant, Monteiro Rossi, who, with his girlfriend, is engaged in political activism, he discovers that ignoring the world around him is no longer an available option.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Pereira declares he met him one summer's day."
Industry Reviews "Just when we might have started to think of him as an elegant dreamer-errant, the Valery Larbaud of Italian letters, Antonio Tabucchi has mercilessly opened a window on the imminent implosion of modern democracy and caught us napping." Times Literary Supplement - Jonathan Keates
"It is a treat to find a contemporary novelist willing to resurrect the old question of literary-political engagement, reminding us that it once was, and can still be, a very dangerous thing." Boston Book Review - Dan Cianfarini (06/19/1996)
"The novel is worth reading not simply because it is ingenious and moving, but because it links politics, commerce, and good writing in a way that's rare in this country." New York Times Book Review - Lawrence Venturi
"One of the most intriguing and appealing character studies in recent European fiction, and easily the best work of Tabucchi's to have appeared in English translation." Harrison
