Movie Description Renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar made his big-screen debut with this zany, provocative film. Carmen Maura stars as Pepi, a crazy Madrid slacker whose friends include Luci (Eva Siva), the masochistic wife of a bullying cop, and 16-year-old Bom (Olvido Gara), the lesbian sadist rocker that Luci leaves her husband for. Lots of crazy vignettes and characters parade by in this melange of outrageousness which includes a bored bearded lady (Kiti Manver), a sex organ measurement contest (presided over by Almodóvar himself), golden showers, drag-queens, drugs, punk rock shows, and a series of commercials for some very special underwear.
Working with an obviously low budget and limited means, Almodóvar still succeeds admirably in both shocking and delighting unsuspecting audiences, especially with the help of the splendidly high-spirited performances from all his actors, particularly Maura in the first of their many collaborations.
Synopsis PEPI, LUCI, BOM is an outrageous comedy that marks the debut of director Pedro Almodóvar. The film is a lewd, crude, and cynical satire about women who shrug off social taboos.
Film Notes Filmed in Madrid, Spain.
ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER star Cecilia Roth has a small role in this film as the star of one of Pepi's obscene commercials.
PEPI, LUCI, BOM was filmed in 16mm and later blown up to 35mm.
Industry Reviews "...The movie is a bouquet of cheerful sleaze....A true underground movie..." Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (08/20/1992)
