Synopsis Peony, the teenage daughter of a wealthy family in 17th-century China, is allowed to see an opera, but only if she hides behind a screen. Like many young Chinese women of the time, she becomes entranced and obsessed with the production. Peony also becomes intrigued with a handsome man she has seen at the performance, but this impropriety threatens to derail her arranged marriage. Lisa See continues to explore Chinese culture in her historical novels, and vividly portrays the hardships and obstacles faced by independent young women.
