Full Description:
Penjing is the Chinese art of creating a miniature landscape in a container. When trees serve as the main medium of artistic expression, a penjing may bear close resemblance to its Japanese counterpart, bonsai. When rocks are the main feature, the penjing may appear less familiar to the Western eye and more uniquely Chinese. The prime objective of the Chinese artist, whether using trees, rocks, or a combination of the two, is to express the beauty of a conceptual idea, to grant out- . ward form to an inner vision. Penjing visually captures the atmosphere and magnificence inherent in a natural landscape. The artist seeks to express the mood and spirit observed in Nature and the emotions or morality instilled in him. In Penjing: Worlds of Wonderment, Qingquan Zhao, one of China's foremost masters, creatively interprets this ancient art form. Recognizing that much has been written on matters of technique and horticultural maintenance, he focuses on aesthetic considerations which can engender true art. Zhao concentrates on the two forms of penjing recognized as being the most distinctly Chinese: literati penjing and water-and-Iand penjing. The former, deriv ing its name from China's traditional scholars, poignantly reveals the cultural impact of classical China. The latter displays a particularly strong affinity with China's garden art. Zhao pioneered its modern version as we know it today. Penjing: Worlds of Wonderment was written for the hobbyist who, having mastered the basic skills of shaping and caring for miniature trees; wishes to hone his artistic sensitivities. It addresses the person interested in the Chinese experience. Any lover of Chinese culture and art will find this book to be delightful reading a most valuable guide in placing aspects of Oriental gardening into a wider cultural perspective.
