Album Notes
Distilling Paul Simon's solo career into a 16-track playlist is a daunting task, considering the bounty of material since his post-Garfunkel 1972 debut. This sampler, released by Starbucks, does a good job of embracing the artist's stylistic shifts and doesn't stint on more recent gems like the soulful, electronica-tinged "Sure Don't Feel Like Love."
Released as part of Starbucks' OPUS COLLECTION series, THIS BETTER BE GOOD is a 16-track sampler of Paul Simon's solo career. A sampler isn't the same thing as a collection of hits, and THIS BETTER BE GOOD is indeed missing some big charting singles: "Duncan," "American Tune," "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "Still Crazy After All These Years," "Graceland," and "You Can Call Me Al" are all missing in action, replaced by a few smaller hits and album tracks, usually from underappreciated latter-day efforts like YOU'RE THE ONE and SURPRISE. This may not give casual fans all the hits they want, but this approach does help introduce those listeners to some excellent songs they may never have heard, so in that sense this is a good introduction even if it isn't necessarily the best overview of his work.
