How is it that Jim Lauderdale can write hit songs for countless country artists yet fails to enjoy any in his own right? It's certainly not for lack of talent. ONWARD once again proves why such top names as George Strait and Patty Loveless regularly turn to Lauderdale for material. This hefty 16-song collection covers a wide range of moods and styles, from upbeat honky-tonk to tales of longing and devotion. As always, Lauderdale's brand of country includes touches of Bakersfield, blues, folk, bluegrass harmony, and rock. What his vocals lack in polish, they more than make up for in sheer passion, and his impressionistic lyrics are a nice change from the typical, spell-it-all-out-for-you style of most country songs. There's plenty of standout material here, including the poetic title track, the rockin' "Still Not Out of the Woods," and the haunting "Lonely Chill." The best of the bunch, though, may be "Trust (Guiding Star)," a driving, spiritual number co-written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Strait fans may be interested in hearing Lauderdale's original version of "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This." Tracks from ONWARD are sure to turn up on one of Strait's future albums. But wouldn't it be cool to hear them here first?
Industry Reviews ...Even walking the center line, Lauderdale knows how to make country ache, bend, snort, and moan in a way no one else does... - Rating: B+
