Album Notes Producers: Al Green, Paul Zaleski. Compilation producer: Al Green. Someone once asked Elvis Costello (during his angry young man period)--if he believed in God. Costello thought for a second and said, "No, but I heard Al Green sing once." This collection of the good Reverend's early-'80s religious output is a pretty good validation of Costello's point. Highlights include "Where Love Rules," which if you don't listen to the lyrics could pass for one of Green's great early-'70s hits; a barn-burning "Saved"; a churchy "Old Rugged Cross" (musically the closest thing here to traditional gospel); and an "Amazing Grace" that's possibly the most soulful version ever heard by sentient mammalian ears.
Industry Reviews ..Fear not; salvation is at hand...the cream of Green's early-'80s albums.. Musician (05/01/1991)
