This is not the bluesy-yet-elegant, driving big band swing of the Basie band of the 1930s. It is the suave, assured, modern (yet keeping the blues flavor), brassy swing of the 1950s Basie band. Neal Hefti and Quincy Jones were among the arrangers whose charts brought Basie into modern times. Smart, sassy and suave--the Basie Orchestra were all those and more, conquering Vegas and beyond.
Guitarist Freddie Green was a holdover from the old days, and ace trumpeter Thad Jones would use this band has a blueprint for his 1960s/'70s modern big band, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. All the soloists are inspired--no "coasting" here! If you liked the Buddy Rich sound of the '60s, or you want to hear the band chosen by Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. for accompaniment, this budget-priced live set is a great introduction to the "modern" Basie. Fans won't be disappointed either--the recording quality is excellent, and the band sounds like they're having the time of their lives.

Industry Reviews
...Anyone who has the privilege of being bowled over by the power, drive, wit and camaraderie of the Basie band of the mid- to late 1950s will relive the experience listening to ONE O'CLOCK JUMP...
