Album Notes ONCE IN A BLUE MOON consists of previously released material as well as previously unreleased demos & outtakes. Personnel includes: Penelope Houston (vocals, autoharp); Pat Johnson (vocals, various instruments); Steven Strauss (vocals, bass); Chuck Prophet, Eliot Nemser (guitar); Kevin Mummey (drums). Recorded between 1990 & 1998. In the late 1970s, Penelope Houston was the singer for one of the first--and best--San Francisco punk rock bands, the Avengers, whom she made special by combining genuine vocal quality with the rage and passion of the time. Later, in embracing a quieter sound that still kept its punch and bite, Houston mined a style joining folk and rock, an approach where a story could be sung with passion and energy. Twenty years on with ONCE IN A BLUE MOON her voice has matured, but still isn't slick or overly sweet--imagine Mary Chapin Carpenter's older, world-wearier sister. Songs such as "Hold Me Up to the Light" and "Loners of America" have a wistful tone, while her awareness of folk music's rich traditions of restlessness and resignation is made clear with "Another Train Blues" and "Black Eyed Peas." Houston also performs a beautiful version of the Alex Chilton/Big Star classic ballad "Take Care," which conveys all you'll ever need to know about the feeling connected with the word "goodbye." With ONCE IN A BLUE MOON Penelope Houston proves that a rock performer can grow old gracefully.
Industry Reviews ...Her delicate, neo-folk arrangements boast similar lyrical strengths...to Patti Smith and Liz Phair... CMJ (04/24/2000)
