Synopsis In the rural Georgia town of Tiberville, the Powell family is losing its children to polio. Hoping to ward off the curse that plagues them, and remembering the words of a long-ago Cherokee ancestor, they commission a Brooklyn artist to create a sculpture of a giant bear. The consequences of this flamboyant act continue to the end of the 20th century, when the daughter of the man who commissioned it falls in love with the son of the man who made it.
