Move over Brandy and Monica, there's another single-name R&B diva in town, and she's called Olivia. From the sultry feel of "Bizounce" to the street-smart hip-hop feel of "Are U Capable," Olivia's eponymous debut recording finds her fully capable of filling the 21st-century pop diva role with style. The young Brooklynite makes her way to the public's ears by way of veteran music impresario Clive Davis, who knows a little about maximizing an artist's pure pop potential. That potential is realized in spades on OLIVIA, as the youthful siren moves easily from romantic R&B ballads full of lush melodies and graceful melisma, to hard-edged, hip-hop-savvy tunes that bespeak a first-hand knowledge of the school of hard knocks. Despite her youth, Olivia sounds like she's been around the block a couple of times and she's come back with a bagful of songs about it.
Industry Reviews ...Unique and groundbreaking... CMJ (04/30/2001)
3 stars out of 5 - ...Well versed in the not always noble art of the R&B ballad...she has a list of saucy demands that would make Lil' Kim blush...
...Comparable to a thugged-out Aaliyah and pissed-off Mya...Olivia is most memorable when she's in woman-scorned mode. Because..who doesn;t appreciate the details of a bad breakup? The Source (07/01/2001)
